The Computer Science Academy

The Santa Barbara High School has a Computer Science Academy within it. This is a program that is currently run by Richard Johnston and enables students to be in a multi-year course sequence to develop computing skills. One of my kids participates in it and I was invited to come down and talk about my current thoughts on technology. So on September 26 I went on down and spoke at lunchtime.

My basic thesis is that as much as we what technology to fix all of our problems what it is really going to do is just amplify our skills.  This will make us faster at doing whatever good or bad we are already doing.Prof. Patterson teaching at the Santa Barbara High School Computer Science Academy

I demonstrated some of Google’s latest and greatest artificial intelligence based products such as Google translate and talked about some of the newest technology that is coming down the road.Prof. Patterson teaching at the Santa Barbara High School Computer Science Academy

It was a really great group of students.  Maybe they were brought out by the pizza and the fact that I was the first speaker of the year.  But for whatever reason they were engaged, and asked lots of good questions.  It was fun to see two of my kids in the audience also!
